Massachusetts College Guide

Lots of news out of Massachusetts this week. The unprecendented health insurance bill and now students and faculty of public colleges are seeking additional funds on top of the 2007 budget funds.

Public college students and faculty from across the state traveled to Beacon Hill Wednesday to urge legislators to grant their schools more money than is included in the House of Representatives fiscal year 2007 budget. “The financial aid budget really wasn’t what we were hoping,” said Fred Clark, executive director of the State College Presidents Council, before an annual luncheon with state lawmakers. Monday, the House Ways and Means Committee released the FY 2007 budget, which allocated an additional $4.6 million for financial aid. Clark said the financial aid funding needs to increase about $20 million to get back to the levels in 2001. Colleges suffered cuts in funding during the economic recession of 2002. “This is the beginning of, hopefully, a restoration of funds to at least get back to where we were,” Clark said. Rep. Kevin Murphy, D-Lowell, cochairman of the Joint Committee on Higher Education, said this year’s House budget reflected the biggest increase in the history of higher education funding from the Massachusetts Legislature.

I have had a few people ask me about local community colleges recently. Community college is a great alternative to a four year school for students in a number of different cateogories. First, students who have not applied themselves as much as they would have liked to in high school can use community colleges to help them gain admission into the 4 year school of their choice much better than they would if they tried to do so straight out of high school. Secondly, students who would like to attend a specific school, might find that certain community colleges get preferential treatment in that school’s eyes and give them a better shot at getting in. Whatever the case may be, community colleges are a great place to learn. One of my favorites is the Massachusetts Bay College community college. This is a great school with excellent professors and staff.

I just came across a great list of online resources for Massachusetts colleges at the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts website. The association represents non-state sponsored schools inside Mass and they have a great list of online resources for students looking to attend college inside or outside the state of Massachusetts.

I love the state of Massachusetts. The state is rich in history and beauty. From the Cape to Martha’s Vineyard to schools like Harvard. Oh, and how can I forget the Sox? One of the hidden gems however is the Massachusetts College of Art. A pioneer in Art education and programs that help students in the state of Massachusetts learn the finer points of Art history as well as expore their talents and creativity. The Mass. College of Art should be on any potential college student’s list who is looking to explore their artistic future.

The University of Massachusetts has just released a study linking memory to moods. So, maybe the fact that you can’t remember something has less to do with your age and more to do with your mood. At least that is what the study may be showing.

A poor memory may not always be an effect of aging, but instead may be an effect of moods, particularly depression, according to researchers from the psychology department at the University of Massachusetts. A study being conducted by Mark Weinberger, a graduate student, Rebecca Ready, assistant psychology professor and Susan Krauss Whitbourne, a psychology professor, is looking at the effects of mood and depression on cognition and memory.

Unless you are looking for pictures of the University of Massachusetts cheerleaders, chances are good that you are.  We just came across a site that, like this one, is dedicated to schools and colleges in Massachusetts.  With all of the junk websites and mis-information that is floating around on the internet today, it is nice to find a site like this one that actually delivers some real and usefull information about educational opportunities for everyone, not just students looking to attend college. Former General Electric Chairman and Salem, Massachusetts native, Jack Welch, has given $1 million for scholarships for Salem students enrolling in the business school at Salem State College.  It has been a windfall year for the small state college as they have received $2 million from Analogic Corp. founder Bernard Gordon and $2.5 million from Henry Bertolon.  In the words of Karen Cady, a college spokeswoman, they have “got a hat trick.” Well said.
