Lots of news out of Massachusetts this week. The unprecendented health insurance bill and now students and faculty of public colleges are seeking additional funds on top of the 2007 budget funds.

Public college students and faculty from across the state traveled to Beacon Hill Wednesday to urge legislators to grant their schools more money than is included in the House of Representatives fiscal year 2007 budget. “The financial aid budget really wasn’t what we were hoping,” said Fred Clark, executive director of the State College Presidents Council, before an annual luncheon with state lawmakers. Monday, the House Ways and Means Committee released the FY 2007 budget, which allocated an additional $4.6 million for financial aid. Clark said the financial aid funding needs to increase about $20 million to get back to the levels in 2001. Colleges suffered cuts in funding during the economic recession of 2002. “This is the beginning of, hopefully, a restoration of funds to at least get back to where we were,” Clark said. Rep. Kevin Murphy, D-Lowell, cochairman of the Joint Committee on Higher Education, said this year’s House budget reflected the biggest increase in the history of higher education funding from the Massachusetts Legislature.

The University of Massachusetts has just released a study linking memory to moods. So, maybe the fact that you can’t remember something has less to do with your age and more to do with your mood. At least that is what the study may be showing.

A poor memory may not always be an effect of aging, but instead may be an effect of moods, particularly depression, according to researchers from the psychology department at the University of Massachusetts. A study being conducted by Mark Weinberger, a graduate student, Rebecca Ready, assistant psychology professor and Susan Krauss Whitbourne, a psychology professor, is looking at the effects of mood and depression on cognition and memory.

Unless you are looking for pictures of the University of Massachusetts cheerleaders, chances are good that you are. We just came across a site that, like this one, is dedicated to schools and colleges in Massachusetts. With all of the junk websites and mis-information that is floating around on the internet today, it is nice to find a site like this one that actually delivers some real and usefull information about educational opportunities for everyone, not just students looking to attend college. Colleges in Massachusetts lists vocational schools as well as listings of colleges and universities. So, if you have thought about continuing your education, finishing up your college degree, or just want to see what is out there, take a look at CIM.

She is a great person and someone who seems to care a great deal about each student’s interests as well as their future education. So, if you know of someone looking for an SAT tutor in San Francisco or the surrounding area, you should contact Danielle.

Seems like it is more and more about who to blame these days. Another example is this article in the Sentinel and Enterprise reporting on the views of some local Massachusetts college freshmen about their first semester in college. Seems that many of the students, quoted in the article, feel that high school teachers did not prepare them adequately for the challenges that were waiting for them in college. I should say that this sentiment was expressed by the students who attended the more difficult schools to gain acceptance to, like Amherst. Seems that more and more pressures are placed on the elementary and secondary school systems in this country. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems that students and parents should bear the burden of responsibility. After all, who ever said there was a free lunch?
