January 9th, 2006Seems like it is more and more about who to blame these days. Another example is this article in the Sentinel and Enterprise reporting on the views of some local Massachusetts college freshmen about their first semester in college. Seems that many of the students, quoted in the article, feel that high school teachers did not prepare them adequately for the challenges that were waiting for them in college. I should say that this sentiment was expressed by the students who attended the more difficult schools to gain acceptance to, like Amherst. Seems that more and more pressures are placed on the elementary and secondary school systems in this country. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems that students and parents should bear the burden of responsibility. After all, who ever said there was a free lunch?

November 4th, 2005Harvard, sure, like he went to Harvard. Sorry, I have to get my movie lines in when I can. What is there to say about Harvard that has not already been said? Well, not much. But, that is not a reason for us not to profile one of the preminent universities in the United States today. Harvard consistently ranks at the top of the US News and World Report College and University List each year and for good reason.
History and Admissions
Founded in 1636, Harvard University is a private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ranking as one of the most selective schools in the United States, Harvard’s campus sees around 6,650 full-time undergrads a year. Normally, about 10% of all of the freshman applicants are accepted each year. Scores for these students are up there as well, with SAT scores in the 1380-1570+ range and most ranking in the top 10% of their high school class. This comes as no surprise really, does it? Applying early is not a bad idea. The early application deadline at Harvard is 11/1 with a notification date of 12/15. A wise choice.
Popular Majors
The most popular majors at Harvard are economics, political science, psychology, history and biology. Class sizes at this premier school see 70% of the classes having fewer than 20 students each. Only 17% have from 20 to 50. That is amazing.
Financial Aid and Expenses
Now for the good stuff. Harvard will run close to $30,000 a year for tuition and another $9,000 or so for room and board. 50% or so of undergrads apply for financial aid, (617) 495-1581, and almost all receive some sort of financial aid package. Packages average around $23,000 a year.
